HATE CRIME: Sikh Man Targeted in Kent, WA

KENT, WA, USA—A Sikh man from Kent, Washington, was left injured when was he shot in the arm by an unknown man wearing a mask. The incident was non-fatal, and the police and FBI are both investigating the shooting.

Aged 39, the Sikh man was targeted on Kent’s East Hill.  The victim was performing some repairs to his vehicle when he was approached by another man, who asked him to “go back to your country”.

Singh has described the assailant as a white man, about 6 feet tall.  He described the man wearing a mask and dressed in dark clothing.

Satwinder Kaur who is running for the Kent City Council, said, “Now that I have had a few hours to process this news. I am saddened and heartbroken at this incident happening in our city. This shows how much more work is there to to be done…”

“I would like to urge residents to be careful and vigilant. Please call 911 if you see something. Kent Police Department is investigating and hope will have more information for us.  We are having conversation with Kent Police Chief today along with our public officials at Kona Kai Coffee at noon.”

Sikh SOCH, a non-profit organization that does humanitarian work in Seattle-Kent area, urged everyone to be careful.  “We have more work to do. This incident indicates how much we need to educate community around us and show them who we are.”  In a Facebook post, the group appealed fellow Sikhs to attend the event at the Kona Kai Coffee to discuss their rights with the police.
