Foolish Ravan was deluded due to his ignorance. As a result, his kingdom Lanka was plundered and he lost also his head. Thus without the love for his guru, he was ruined due to his arrogance. Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 224
Message: Cruel Ambition That Kills
As mentioned in the epic Ramayan, Ravan was a very powerful but wicked king who committed atrocities on his people.
He even kidnapped the wife of Ram, the son of King Dasrath. But he was ultimately killed in battle by the latter.
So the Guru says: Foolish and unwise Ravan became arrogant and forgot the Creator. The end result was that he lost his kingdom and his life too.
Not adhering to the advice of his guru, Shukra, he was destroyed by his own follies and egoism.
Etymology: From Sanskrit raava? (crying out, roaring). According to F. E. Pargiter, the word may originally have been a Sanskrit modification ofiraivan, the Tamil name for a lord or king.
