As an addict is addicted to intoxicants, landlords love their land, and a baby is attached to milk, so are saintly persons absorbed in the love of the Divine. – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 613

Message:

Lord’s Elevated Souls

In one’s spiritual quest, the divine seeker yearns for the mystical love of the Divine and thus rejects emotional and physical attachments but remains uninvolved in unnecessary and harmful distractions of the world rising to see the Divine in all

This longing of a divine lover to see the Divine in all by imbibing His virtues are compared to how an addict is entangled and ensnared by intoxicants. The addict is completely absorbed in his obsession.

Other examples offered are that of landlords with attachment to their land and the hunger of an infant for milk.

On the other hand, the wise demonstrate a positive craving for the love of the Divine and their devotion is absolute and pure.  Enveloped and permeated by the Creator’s loving grace, they remain attached to Him in good and bad times.

In that sense, ‘addiction’ to the Creator, while we carry out daily affairs responsibly, is an addiction that will beat other addictions and infact lead to a happier life.

A man does not have to be an angel in order to be saint. -Albert Schweitzer, philosopher, Nobel laureate, 1875 -1965

Etymology: Compound of prabh (the Divine), from Sanskrit prabhu (strong, capable, master, lord) and sant (saintly being), from Sanskrit sat (real, true, good; one who knows the Truth, the ultimate Reality).
