(O Almighty!) When You are on my side, then who else do I need to depend on (i.e. there is no dependence on anyone else, I rely on You only). – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1096
Message: We often have an inkling of whether we are going to be successful in some endeavour. Sometimes, we come to realise that we may not achieve what we set out to achieve owing to our inadequacies. This realisation comes from self-awareness and mindfulness.
However, if we adopt the teachings of the Guru i.e. walk the path of virtues and are mindful of our actions, we will have confidence in the way we carry ourselves. We will feel so spirited that we will feel capable of undertaking everything that is entrusted to us.
With faith in the Divine, whilst leading a life based on virtues, there is no need to depend on anyone else. We are prepared for what life hands out to us. We shall have the confidence that our problems will be resolved. We will experience bliss and peace.
This very famous and often quoted verse in Sikh circles exhibits the unquestioned faith and trust we need to have in the Divine. When the Almighty is on our side, we just need to be calm and not worry!
Etymology: From Persian muhtaajee (need, want).
