The Amritsar parliament seat was vacated by the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee head Captain Amarinder Singh on November 23 by resigning in protest of Supreme Court�s verdict against Punjab on SYL-canal. �The Election�Commission is required to hold by-poll within six months�of the post being vacated.
Initially, speculations were being made that Captain Amarinder Singh had hit two targets with single stone. �It was alleged that Captain had vacated the seat for Navjot Singh Sidhu as well as to contest assembly elections from Patiala. But later the announcement made by Sidhu�s wife Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu had clarified that Navjot Sidhu was going to contest assembly elections from Amritsar (East) constituency.
As per the announcement made by Election Commission, the notification for the by-poll will be issued on January 11 and the last date for nomination will be January 18. The nominations will be scrutinized on January 19 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations will be January 21.
