BREAKING: Punjab Assembly Elections Set For February 4

NEW DELHI, India—The Election Commission of India today announced it’s assembly elections schedule for five states, namely Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Manipur and Uttrakhand. The Election Commission has set February 4 to complete the election process in Punjab in a single phase, while the election process in other states will be completed by March 8. The election process in Punjab, Goa & Uttrakhand will be completed in single phase while in Uttar Pradesh & Manipur it will be completed in seven & two phases respectively.

January 18 has been fixed as the last date for submission of nomination papers in Punjab, and January 21 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of a nominee. The nomination papers will be scrutinized on January 19 and the counting of votes will occur on March 11.

With the announcement of a date for the assembly polls, the model code of conduct has come into force in all poll participating states. With the imposition of the poll code, the entire administration of poll going state comes under control of Election Commission of India, including transfers of administrative officials.   

A total of 19,214,236 voters in Punjab will elect their legislator by voting in 22,600 polling stations in 117 assembly constituencies of Punjab, of which 34 are reserved for SC candidates. 98.57% of total voters in Punjab have been provided the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC).

Addressing a press conference today, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said that the Election Commission was committed to enforce the recent Supreme Court ruling of barring political outfits to solicit votes on the basis of religion, caste, race, community or language in all poll going states including Punjab.
