Two Bailed in SGGS Desecration Murder Case

LUDHIANA, Punjab—Two Sikh youth, Amritpal Singh Jodhpuri and Fauja Singh, who were indicted in the murder case of Balwinder Kaur, a key culprit responsible for the desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji at Ghawaddi, received bail on December 15 from the Court of Ludhiana’s Additional Session Judge Jatinderpal Singh Khurmi.

Speaking to Sikh24, advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur also shared that a total of seven Sikh youth have been charged in this case.  

Balwinder was shot dead by unidentified assailants near Ludhiana on the morning of July 26 when two men riding a motorcycle fired upon her, resulting in her succumbing to her wounds.

Balwinder, aged 48, had been in judicial custody since October 2015, charged with committing the sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at village Ghawaddi on October 19, 2015, and was out on bail.  She was shot outside Gurdwara Manji Sahib in Alamgir when she arrived there to meet with someone. Balwinder was accompanied by her son, who was not targeted during the attack.

Balwinder and her husband Sikander were both arrested for committing sacrilege in October 2015. Balwinder had worked as a sevadar at the for over two decades before she was arrested in connection with the sacrilege case whilst her husband was the Granthi there.
