The mind, like a drunken elephant, is drunk with the intoxicant of egotism. The Guru, by applying the goad of his Word, is capable of reviving it. – Guru Amar Das, Guru Granth Sahib, 159
Message: The emphasis here is on the human mind. This is compared to a drunken wild elephant. Under the intoxication of egotism, the mind sets its own agenda. The Guru applies the goad of his wisdom the divine word and brings the mind under control.
The human mind is never satisfied with what is or what it already has. It always wants more and more. There is the greed to be somebody and the fear of being nobody. Under this form of intoxication, one is completely carried away.
How can one bring such a mind under control? Like a mahout who uses a goad to tame the wild elephant, the Guru steps in with the wisdom of the Divine to help rein in the intoxicated mind. By the Gurus guidance, wisdom soon comes to dwell in the mind. Absorbed in this wisdom, the human is then able to eradicate egotism and corruption from ones mind. The minds wandering nature is subdued.
