High Court asks DSGMC to present design of ‘Piao’ ensuring no traffic problem

Site of piao demolished outside Gurdwara Sees Ganj Sahib

NEW DELHI—The Delhi High Court on October 27 asked the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee to present a good architectural design of the ‘Piao’ so that the problem of traffic could not re-emerge outside Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib.

Notably, the High Court had earlier ordered the demolition of ‘Piao’ (water serving shelf) hearing a case over land dispute.  The demolition led to huge conflict within the Delhi Government and the DSGMC.   DSGMC blamed Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi Government for hurting Sikh sentiments by demolition the piao.

Constitutional bench of Justice B.D Ahmed and Justice Ashutosh Kumar said that the DSGMC needs to obey the Court orders and prepare such a design that the problem of traffic couldn’t re-emerge again. The bench said that the rights of minorities were fully reserved in constitution of India.

On May 11, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee lodged an FIR against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Cabinet Minister Satinder Jain and MLA Alka Lamba for hurting Sikh sentiments by demolishing a water stall (piao) installed outside Gurdwara Sees Ganj Sahib.

Addressing a press conference, DSGMC President Manjit Singh GK refuted the allegations raised by Public Work Department and Shahjahanbad Redevelopment Corporation that the water stall was constructed illegally by the DSGMC.  Accusing MLA Alka Lamba for playing politics over religious issues, GK said that the MLA had knowingly demolished water shelf so that she can charge illegal ransoms from other building owners of Chandni Chowk who have illegally constructed buildings.

In response to allegations by the DSGMC, Bhai Jarnail Singh on April 12 said, “Delhi Govt. took initiative to resolve the Sees Ganj Piyaoo issue which is a result of Court order on Madhu Kishwar’s PIL. We Invited DSGMC and other representatives and PWD minister Satyender Jain [to clear] govenment’s stand which is against demolition of Piyaoo and Bhai Matidaas chok. 1.”
