The Divine dwells within the home (mind), but due to the love of the other, there is darkness of ignorance. The light dawns when one sheds egoism and self-centredness. – Guru Amar Das, Guru Granth Sahib, 126
Message: There is a divinity in all of us that is the light. Ignorance of the presence of this divine spark has steeped us in a darkness which we are not even aware of. We perceive this limited life, the body, and the material world outside as our reality. We are self-centered and egoistic. Due to this love for the self, we are separated from the other reality, the love of the Divine.
When one sheds ones focus on the self – ones egoism – and sees the one Divine everywhere and shared by everyone, the light dawns. Awareness of this common bond in mankind and nature takes away all ignorance, anxiety, doubt, delusion and sorrow from within.
When a candle is lit in a dark room, the light displaces the darkness but the room remains the same. Awareness of the love of the Divine, awareness of the presence of the all-pervading Divine in and around us, does not dramatically change our life situation. As the light of Truth begins to shine upon us, it enriches us and lightens our burdens.
Etymology: Modification of the combination of doojaa (other) + bhaau (love) Sanskritbhaav(being, thing; state, disposition).
Summary of the Week:
Darkness manifests itself in many ways in life. In a spiritual sense, darkness is contrasted with the picture of the Divine as light, and describes living without knowing about divinity and wisdom. Living in darkness denotes a state of ignorance of the Divine. It can mean a lack of knowledge or enlightenment. It can also mean rebellion against or rejection of the Divine.
Our Gurus teachings constantly remind us that deep within the self is the light of the Divine. This light is the jewel in our life. If we open our hearts to the Gurus wisdom and follow its teachings, this will light up our lives as our ignorance will be dispelled. We will come nearer to the knowledge of Truth that the Creator lives in the creation and is not separate from us.
What we need to do is to understand the role of the Divine in our lives. Only His wisdom can remove the egoism and the self-centeredness in us. We need to surrender willingly to this light within us. In humility, we must accept the resources and strengths it offers us.

Through association with the saintly beings, the Divine dwells in the mind, and thus, all suffering, pain, ignorance, and delusion depart. – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 211
