Gurbani Word Of The Day: chiňtaamani

ਚਿੰਤਾਮਨਿ (chiňtaamani)
Meaning: noun: A mythical gem, believed to be providing desired objects.

Quote:
ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਸੁਰਿਤਰੁ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਨਿ   ਕਾਮਧੇਨ ਬਸਿ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੇ॥
sukh saagar suritaru chiňtaamani   kaamdhen bas jaa ke re.
The Divine is the ocean of peace; the wish-fulfilling tree, the gem which fulfils all desires, and the wish-fulfilling cow, all are under His power. – Bhagat Ravidas, Guru Granth Sahib, 658

Message: Would you choose to believe in the power of a mythical gem or the power of its creator to help fulfill your wishes? Bhagat Ravidas, in the verse above points us to the creator – the Divine – reminding us again that all are under His power. And if peace is what we are looking for in our lives, then He is the ocean of peace.

In place of the mythical gem, there is another more precious gem, which will help fulfill our wishes. However, many among us have not yet recognized it. We carry it with us without an awareness of its presence, without an awareness of its power. The divine spirit in us is the priceless gem. Yet we are oblivious of its presence and instead strive to obtain a limited worldly version.

Time and again we are reminded of the power of the Almighty. Yet our egoism gets the better of us and we go astray. With the gem as our guiding light, let us dispel our ignorance and devote ourselves to the one true power.

Etymology: From Sanskrit chintaamaṇi → Pali chintaamaṇi (fabulous gem, which gives the possessor all one desires).
