NEW DELHI—President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) S. Simranjit Singh Mann has written a letter to the Chief of Supreme Court T.S. Thakur seeking him to rollback a verdict issued to extend SGPC’s tenure.  The verdict was issued to extend the enture of the SGPC general house elected in 2011.

In his letter, S. Mann has said that as per law, SGPC members elected in 2011 have already completed their five years and now the time of new election was due.  Warmly welcoming the decision of Supreme Court of abolishing the voting right of ‘Sehajdhari Sikhs’ from SGPC elections, S. Simranjit Singh Mann has said that the Sikh community has appreciated the move and now only Sikhs living their lives as per the Sikh code of conduct will be able to decide the working of the SGPC to manage Gurdwaras.

S. Mann said that the Supreme Court’s decision of extending tenure of SGPC member for five years was a dictatorial decision.  He added that it was unfair that the Sikh community has been forced to remain deprived of choosing its new representatives in SGPC without elections.

Mann further appealed T.S. Thakur to direct the Union Home Ministry of India to hold the due elections of SGPC and order the Election Commission to prepare fresh lists of Sikh voters as per the new protocol.

  1. Isn’t it ironic that in so called free country Sikhs have to take permission of the government to conduct their own affairs.
