Kabir! Eating khichdi, which has sublime salt in it, is excellent. Who would have his throat slit, for the sake of hearty meals? Bhagat Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib, 1374
Message: Khichdi is a popular dish eaten in Pakistan and northern India. It is simple but nutritious food. As did Baba Farid, Bhagat Kabir also favours simple food given through the kindness of the Divine. Who other than our Creator, would know better what sustenance the body needs and provide for it.
Humans, however, have taken the task upon themselves to feed the body as they please. The variety and quantity of food consumed is also dependent on our egoism and our greed. There is overeating and there is waste. Should we not heed Kabirs call to keep our diet simple and nutritious?
People think that the spirit can be fed and satisfied through consuming a wide variety of food. Stop and reflect on where this practice has led mankind. As we abuse the body through too little by choice and through too much, are we not slitting our own throats?
Etymology: From Sanskrit khichchaa (dish of rice and legumes) ? Prakrit khichch ? Sindhi khichu (dish of boiled millet), and Punjabi/Gujarati/Hindi khich?ee (rice and lentils).
