Richmond Hate Crime Victims Gets Support from Online Campaign

RICHMOND, CA, USA—After being violently attacked on September 25, 2016, Maan Singh Khalsa has received support from an online donation campaign to assist with medical expenses.  In less than one day, over $2,000 has been raised for Mr. Khalsa who was attacked on his way home when he was attacked by five white males.

Meanwhile, Richmond Mayor Tom Butt has condemned the statement and called for a thorough investigation.

“No one should have to experience the fear of being targeted or attacked based on their identity or for practicing their religion,” Richmond Mayor Tom Butt said.  “In Richmond, we cherish the various cultures and backgrounds that contribute to our great diversity. I know the people of Richmond will respond to this incident in any way they can to lend support and show solidarity with the Sikh community.”

Mayor Butt has described the attack as a hate crime.

So far, two attackers, namely Chase Little and Dustin Albarado have been arrested while search continues for three others.

The donation campaign setup online states that Mr. Khalsa sustained cuts on his fingers and his hands that required stitches, a swollen black eye, and damage to his teeth, in addition to deep humiliation. Following the attack, one of his fingers became infected and may be amputated. Mr. Khalsa will also have to undergo root canals due to the damage to his teeth. The dental work alone will amount to $2,200 in out-of-pocket medical expenses.

While speaking with Sikh24, Harman Singh who is managing the online donation campaign said, “So far we have raised $2000 and are almost at our goal of $3500. We would like thank the community for the great support and generosity.”
