In the city (human body) reside five thieves. In spite of efforts to control them, (each one of them) runs out to steal (do something wrong). – Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 503

Message:Guru Nanak compares the human body to a city where five thieves live: lust, anger, greed, worldly attachment, and arrogance. If no constant effort is made to control them, they will overpower and hijack us of our spiritual values.

How can we keep these vices within limit and regularly scrutinize ourselves so that they are not turned into permanent habits?

Gurbani explains that these vices can be brought under control by keeping our mind restrained from evil-mindedness and putting it to constructive and healthy use.

Associating ourselves with the Divine or Guru oriented people i.e. sadh sangat, where the atmosphere is positive, and attuning ourselves to dwell on virtues is the way. When the mind is centered on divine awareness in a positive community, it can only become positive and practise positive habits.
