Gurbani Word Of The Day: keerat

ਕੀਰਤਿ (keerat)
Meaning: noun: Praise, singing praises of the Divine.

Quote:
ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ   ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਰਮਾ॥
har keerat saadh-sangat hai   sir karman kai karma.
Singing praises of the Divine in the association of the devout is supreme of all religious practices. – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 642

Message: One significant aspect of Sikh faith is the idea of community and group consciousness. When like-minded, saintly and righteous individuals assemble, they are known as the true congregation (or sadh sangat). In Sikh faith, the highest of all practices is to sing and listen to the recitation of Gurbani in the company of the devoted congregation. When the congregation listens to the recitation with attention and devotion, and reflects on the meaning of the hymns, the music uplifts and the hymns purify the minds of the devotees. And by practising the wisdom therein, they savour the essence of spirituality.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਰਧਾ ਊਪਜੈ   ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੁ॥
Joining the sangat, the congregation, faith wells up, and through the Word of the Guru, the sublime essence of the Divine is tasted. – Guru Ram Das, Guru Granth Sahib, 997

Etymology: From Sanskrit keerti (report, fame, praise) → Pali → Prakrit → Gurbani keerati.
