Thus, hearing (the glorious accounts of the exalted devotees), Dhanna, a farmer, devoted himself to the Divine. The Lord revealed Himself to him and he became so very fortunate. Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 487
Message: Bhagat Dhanna was another mystic poet who was influenced by the bhakti movement. His three hymns are compiled in the Guru Granth Sahib. He was born in 1425 in Rajasthan to a simple farmer. In the beginning an idol worshipper, he soon realized its futility and gained enlightenment through his unwavering determination to meet the Divine. He realized Him through his innocence and simple piety. He believed the Divine is omniscient and He is our provider. Ask and you shall receive. Simple, hardworking, and straightforward, he enjoyed the company of saints and scholars. He was unwavering in his devotion and commitment to the Divine.
Wisdom comes to us from various sources. Dhanna, exposed to idol worship, soon began to question this practice, and the desire to understand the Divine, made him turn to follow the teachings of wise men of the bhakti movement. His enlightenment came from questioning accepted practices. Do we question the beliefs we have grown up with? Bhagat Dhanna teaches us to put these beliefs to a test. If they dont work, he teaches us to turn to the enlightened ones for wisdom. The Guru Granth Sahib is our source of wisdom and enlightenment. If we were to put a simple innocent faith in this wisdom and then commit wholeheartedly to follow in its path, there is a lot we can learn and achieve. It all starts with a desire to understand our connection to the Creator.
