Namdevs mind was constantly absorbed in the Divine. In this way, the calico-printer, worth half a shell, became worth millions.
– Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 487
Message:Bhagat Namdev was born in 1270 in Maharashtra, India, to a poor calico printers family which was considered to be socially low caste. His mind was constantly absorbed in thoughts of the Divine and he wrote devotional verses which he used, to sing and praise the glory of the Lord. Namdevs hymns suggest that the Divine is within oneself and its presence and oneness is in everyone and everything.
With his mind awakened to divine awareness and constantly immersed in its essence, the result was that, one who was considered to be worthless in society became highly regarded and spiritually wealthy. He visited Punjab and other parts of India to meet people and share his divine intimations. His 60 hymns in 18 different raags are recorded in the Guru Granth Sahib.
It does not matter where our beginnings may lie. What matters most is what we gather as we proceed along the journey of life. Namdev came from a poor and low social class beginning to rise to the status of a renowned saint. We learn from him that what we need, for spiritual union with the Divine, is a desire or a hunger to devote our life to this mission, to move steadily towards a path to enlightenment. As we focus on the accumulation of material wealth, why not give equal importance to the accumulation of spiritual wealth too.
Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition, and listening to His voice in the depth of our hearts. -Mother Teresa
