BREAKING: Journalist Surinder Singh Acquitted By TADA Court

:dateline:Renowned Journalist Surinder Singh was today acquitted by a TADA (Terrorists and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act) Court in a case dating back to 1987.

Notably, Journalist Surinder Singh surrendered in October 2015 and he was languishing in the Ambala jail since then. The case proceedings were delayed by the court several times.

Before his arrest, Surinder Singh was providing coverage to social and human rights issues. He is a well established journalist and media personality. Even though the statute of Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) expired in1995, it was used against Surinder Singh. He was also detained in Punjab in February 2015 along with Bapu Surat Singhs son Ravinderjeet Singh Gogi.

Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, commonly known as TADA, was an anti-terrorism law which was in force between 1985 and 1995 (modified in 1987) under the background of Punjab insurgency and was applied to whole of India. It came into effect on 23 May 1985. It was renewed in 1989, 1991 and 1993 before being allowed to lapse in 1995 due to increasing unpopularity due to widespread allegations of abuse.
