(To obtain spiritual intoxicant) make wisdom the molasses, contemplation the flowers ofdhavaiand good deeds the fermenting bark to mix in it. – Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 360

Message:Some religious sects distill and drink specially fermented liquor. They think it will help them in meditation. In the above verse, Guru Nanak tells us the ingredients necessary to distill a spiritual intoxicant that will give us a perpetual high. The essential ingredient is wisdom. Another is contemplation on this wisdom. And a third is for good deeds to displace evil deeds and thoughts existing in the mind. When one drinks this distilled spiritual nectar, one remains intoxicated indefinitely.

Alcohol and drugs give us temporary relief from our everyday anxieties and problems. They are not a cure for them. They do not help remove them. Wisdom from Gurbani, however, helps us reconfigure our thoughts, allowing us to reach a different plane of consciousness. This helps us change our perception of issues we are faced with. This is the spiritual high that we need to live our life surrendering to the divine will. A spirit filled life is beautiful, graceful, and gentle. It has a characteristic and unique savour to it.

Etymology:From Sanskritgu?(boiled sugarcane juice, molasses) ? Paligul? Prakritgu?/gul? Shinagu?? Sindhigu?u,Lahndi and Punjabigu?(jaggery).
