Gurbani Word Of The Day: ku-vaaṭ-ṛee

ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ (ku-vaaṭ-ṛee)
Meaning: noun: Bad road, wrong path.

Quote:
ਦੂਜੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ   ਇਕਸ ਸਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ॥
doojee chhoḍ kuvaaṭṛee   ikas sau chit laai.
doojai bhaavṅee naankaa   vahaṇ luṛaaňdṛee jaai.
(O human!) Attach your consciousness with the One, and forsake the other wrong path. Nanak! One who attaches one’s mind with the other (than the Divine) is washed down the stream of worldliness. – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1426

Message: We all come blessed with a divine spirit in us. This is housed in a body that is sensual and looks for its comforts in the outside world. On our journey, we are faced with two paths. One leads us to a relationship with the Divine, while the other takes us down the worldly route. The Guru beseeches us to be aware of the two opposing paths. We are asked to forsake the wrong path for the truthful other, to attune the mind only to the One, to tread on the right path, which leads us to the light of the Divine.

Should we choose the wrong one, we will be trapped in the snares of worldliness, and the outcome will not be very pleasant.

Etymology: Blend of ku, prefix(bad, wrong) +kuvaatṛeemodified from vaat (road, path, way).
