:dateline:Sikhs for Justice has sought criminal charges against Charanjit Sharma, a Punjab police officer allegedly responsible for commanding the police that opened fire and killed two Sikhs in Behbal Kalan in October 2015. Bhai Gurjeet Singh and Bhai Kishan Bhagwan Singh were shot deadduring the shooting.

In its letter dated August 12 to theMinisters Goodale, McCallum and Dion, Sikhs for Justice has sought arrest of Charanjit Sharma who is currently visiting Canada. Sikhs for Justice has cited the provisions of Canada’sCriminal Code and Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) to seek the criminal charges. The letter states that the investigations byJustice Katju and Justice Zora Commissions create “reasonable grounds to believe that on October 14,2015, Charanjit committed acts rendering him inadmissible to Canada under subsections 36(1)(c) and36(2)(c) of IRPA.

The letter states that subsection 36(1)(c) and36(2)(c) of lRPA provide that a permanent resident or a foreign national is inadmissible on grounds of serious criminality for … committing an act outside Canada that is an offence in the place where it was committed and that, if committed in Canada, would constitute an offence under an Act of Parliament.” If convicted, Sharma can face imprisonment up to 10 years in Canada.

Seeking charges against Sharma, Sikhs for Justice stated that Charanjit is benefitting from a system of state-sanctioned impunity and that the Punjab Government will not file murder charges. Sikhs for Justice further stated that the organization is working with the Trudeau government to ban the entry of Indian police officials responsible for human rights violations.

During October 2015, members of the Sikh community were peacefully protesting against sacrilege of their holy scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Punjab police opened fire to disperse the protesters. This indiscriminate firing upon the Sikhs left two dead and several critically injured.
