Such initiatives by the Kejriwal Government have received backlash and opposition, primarily by BJP and Congress supporters in Delhi. Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party secured massive victory in Delhi 2015 Legislative Assembly elections, securing 67 seats, compared to 3 by BJP and 0 by Congress. Following his appointment as Delhi Chief Minister, Kejriwal has taken several initiatives for the Sikh community. His Government has provided rehabilitation packages to widows of 1984 Sikh genocide.
Arvind Kejriwal had also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the working of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) organized by the Central government to probe cases related to 1984 Sikh genocide. Kejriwal had sought permission from the Union government to organize an independent SIT to probe cases on behalf of the Delhi government. Under pressure of Kejriwal’s queries, the Union government triggered the working of SIT and an announcement to probe closed cases was made by the SIT. Union government of India had initially organized SIT for six months in February, 2015 but later its validity was extended for one year.
