AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Sikh Sangat of the East Coast has approached the Sarbat Khalsa 2015 appointed Takht Jathedars regarding violation of Amrit Sanchar Maryada at a Gurdwara Sahib in Virginia.  At the Gurdwara Sahib in Virginia, which is managed by Central Sikh Mission of America, the Granthi named Kuldeep Singh had tampered the tradition of Amrit Sanchaar.

Kuldeep Singh and others organized amrit sanchar without reading 3 of the 5 amrit sanchaar banis.  This incident took place on April 14.

Gurpreet Singh, a Sikh from Virginia told Sikh24 that him, along with local Sikhs from other cities in the East Coast have complained about the incident to the Sarbat Khalsa Jathedars.  “We have sent a written complaint and sent messages to the Jathedars to resolve the issue.  We understand that they under a lot of Government pressure, however issue needs to be resolved once and for all,” Gurdeep Singh said.

The violation of Sikh code of conduct was also brought in notice of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.  Acting on information provided by Bhai Paramjit Singh Khalsa of the International Sikh Federation, on June 4, the Badal appointed Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh issued an edict excommunicating five US resident Sikhs responsible for tampering the amrit sanchar mayada.

Names of the excommunicated are Kuldeep Singh, Gurdeep Singh, Amarjit Singh, Rajinder Singh and Amarjit Singh Narula.

While excommunicating Virginia Sikhs, at the same time, Giani Gurbachan Singh commuted the punishment of Ragi Bhai Balbir Singh from lifetime ban on Kirtan to listening or performing ‘Sehaj Path’ and cleaning utensils at any Gurdwara Sahib for 10 days.

It is pertinent to note here that Ragi Bhai Balbir Singh had recited Gurbani scripts to praise Noormehal Cult Chief Ashutosh. The video had surfaced online following which ban on his Kirtan was imposed for lifetime.

  1. Guru Pyari Saad Sangat ji, I want to say at the out set that I am not against the institution of our Akal Takht Sahib. Now coming to the issue “isn’t it shameful that persons are being thrown out of our religion for following Guru Granth Sahib JI ” Didn’t Guru Gobind Singh ji ordered all sikhs to follow Guru Granth Sahib ji and nothing else. What is their crime (not following the Amrit Sanchar Maryada) now which maryada are we talking about ? All one has to do is do little research one can see how many places are not following this Maryada, some places women are being given pahul using kirpan and only one Bani,( Are women less of a Khalsa than men) some places more than five bani’s are read :Has our Jathedars taken any action against them ?( I haven’t seen any) Now coming to the selection of Jathedars. Who selects them, what are their qualifications, how long are their terms , what are their duties, these are few obvious points come to mind. Looking at the current history these persons are appointed by politicians and fired by the same at will so what good will come from asking these persons for direction who has no leg to stand on. Historically there is no argument on Amrit sanchar but because of lack of written document written by Guru Gobind Singh ji what was read at that time of pahul has been controversial from the beginning. In the last century few wise persons got together and wrote a document which was subsequently followed. But humans make mistakes and these can be corrected. With new information coming out, questions are being raised about the authenticity of the banis read at pahul and it has been going on for sometime. The problem has been instead of answering the questions our jathedars of the time threw them out of the religion (thats what has happened now to the folks in Virginia)but this cannot go on for forever. Now it is high time the intellectuals of our religion should get together and sort out the problems before it is too late.May waheguru give us the wisdom to correct our mistakes. Waheguru bless us all. Rajinder Singh
