:dateline:In a meeting of the senior leadership of the Sikh Students Federation (Mehta), a serious discussion occurred over the current circumstances of the Sikh panth. The leadership decided to reinstate the organizational structure of Sikh Students Federation (Mehta) so it couldplay a largerrole in current religious, social and political issues.
Following a brief discussion, Bhai Lakhbir Singh Sekhon was appointed as acting President of the Federation by its patron Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta and Bhai Amarjit Singh Chawla. Bhai Mehta saidthat Bhai Lakhbir Singh Sekhon had earlier served the Sikh Students Federation as President of the Khalsa College Unit as well as District President from Amritsar.
A 13 member ad-hoc committee wasformed to establish the permanent structure of the organizationwithin three months. Bhai Jaspal Singh Ferozepur, Bhai Shishpal Singh Meerankot, Bhai Tejinderpal Singh Timma, Bhai Gurmeet Singh, Bhai Amarbir Singh Dhot, Bhai Gagandeep Singh, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Virk, Bhai Sherbir Singh, Bhai Mandeep Singh, Bhai Harmenon Singh, Bhai Manjit Singh, Bhai Ranjit Singh Rana, Bhai Gurdeep Singh Sur Singh have been included in the 13 member ad-hoc committee.
Lately, the leaders of Sikh Student Federation (Mehta) have received a lot of flak due to various reasons. While the leadership played a prominent role in the struggle for Sikh rights during the late 1980s, several of its prominent members have kept control over the organization. Despite being old aged now, these members have not appointed new leaders. The Federation leaders also hold proximity with the ruling Akali Dal for which their leaders have lost much respect within the community, especially the diaspora.
