Message: To calm the restless mind and to find some peace, we need to look at our thoughts. What is going on in our mind? What are we thinking about? How hurried and rushed are these thoughts?

Our Gurus have identified five thieves that constantly rob us of our peace of mind. These are lust (kaam), anger (krodh), greed (lobh), attachment (moh), and pride (ahankar). These energies, when used in a negative manner, lead to restlessness in the mind. They separate the individual from his or her inner spiritual essence.

Our task is to free ourselves from their negative influence. Wisdom from our Gurus, makes us aware of their presence in us; making us aware of how greatly they influence our decisions and our life. Through this enlightenment, and by following the advice given to us by Gurbani on how to deal with these negative energies in us, we can be free of their hold on us. As they remain a constant in our lives, this means that we have to be on guard at all times. Hence, the need to be watchful over our thoughts.

The mind has to be able to discern and discriminate between what is beneficial and what is harmful to our spirit. Once we tread on the path of wisdom, the dark shadows disappear in the new dawn of light.

Etymology: From Sanskrit dosh (fault) ? Pali/Prakrit dos (blame, fault, harm) ? Old Gujarati dos (vice) and West Pahari dos (defect, evil power).
