:dateline:On April 7th, apetition regarding the false encounters committed by Punjab police during the last twodecades was withdrawn fromthe Punjab and Haryana High Court. This petition had been filed in theHigh Court by a niece of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and a widow of a martyred Singh on the basis of important informationdivulgedby Gurmeet Pinky, a policeinformant (CAT), who became apolice officer.
Last year in May, journalist, Kanwar Sandhu had released a series of interviews with Gurmeet Pinky. In the interviews, Pinky namedseveral senior ranking Punjab police officials as havingcarried out the murders of innocent Sikhs across Punjab. At that time, Pinky stated that the information he revealed wasonly 1% of what he knew.He stated that in the future, he would reveal other facts. Shortly, however, Pinky completely reversed his stance and stated that he was interviewed under pressure.
Along with the petition, an affidavit had been submitted to deposeGurmeet Pinky before theCourt. The petitioners had sought ajudicial investigationinto the falseencounters committed by the Punjab police. However, Gurmeet Pinkys backtracking weakened the basis of their petition, which caused them to withdraw it. The petitioners are being represented byAdvocate Rajwinder Singh Bains.
