Saintly beings are very brave and true to their words. They deceive (conquer) the wretched Maya (who deceives the whole world). -Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 392
Message: Saintly beings are people who stand up for truth and justice and keep their promises. You can trust them because they do what they say they will do. Their unshakeable faith in righteousness is not swayed by worldly temptations. In this tempestuous world, the practice of divine virtues takes courage; hence, they are deemed as being brave and heroic.
It takes courage to stand for the truth as laid out in Gurbani. It takes courage to face opposition with the strength of ones conviction. The forces of negativity are all around and one needs to be alert and attentive at all times. Mindful of what is important, saints are able to conquer their egoism and not get caught in Maya and its worldly snares.
Notes: The word kaulaa literally means – the goddess of wealth (Lakshmi) in Hindu mythology, which is synonymous to Maya – the world and its snares, the corrupting worldly delights. It can be compared to Mammonism (the greedy pursuit of riches) and Plutolatry, from Pluto, the god of wealth in Greek mythology (excessive devotion to wealth).
Etymology: From Sanskrit shooro-veer (brave, warrior).
