Even if there are foods of so many different kinds, and abundant pleasures and entertainments (to please the mind, still, this mind is not satisfied without the Beloved). – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 373
Message: Food for the body and pleasure for the senses is what many of us work hard for. Having met the basic needs, we do not stop there. We work harder for more options and variety in our life. These soon become the marks of our success. How far do we take this? Is there an end? Too little food can lead to malnutrition, while too much and too rich food can be the cause of disease and resultant misery.
Our focus remains on satisfying the hunger and greed of the body. As we get carried away to fulfil these desires, the mind goes along. It appears as if it is working alongside us and is happy. Soon, it stops. It pulls back. It becomes restless as if looking for something more satisfying.
Just as we need to nourish our body with food so it works well for us, the mind needs to nourish itself with the eternal connection to our divine spirit, so that it does not shrivel and die suffocated by worldly comforts. Hence the restlessness in the mind.
Etymology: From Sanskrit vya?jan (seasoning, side dish; special eatable, etc.).
