Bhai Rajoana Asks President Not to Delay Capital Punishment

2015-10-10_rajoana:dateline:In a letter addressed to the President of India on March 14, 2016,�Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana wrote that�his�capital punishment was a political tactic. The�capital punishment of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana was delayed in March 2012 on the appeal of the SGPC.

Large scale protests took place across Punjab and in several countries internationally by the Sikh Sangat protesting Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana’s capital punishment. �Seeing growing angish amongst the global Sikh community, the SGPC and Akali Dal had asked the President of India to not�

Bhai Rajoana said that he has been imprisoned for 21 years�and the court hasn�t been able to reach a conclusion�on his case until�now.

“I have been imprisoned for over 20 years since my arrest on December 22, 1995, in relation to assassination of Beant (former Chief Minister). �I was sentenced to death on July 31, 2007 and my sentence was reaffirmed by the Punjab & Haryana High Court on October 11, 2010. �I have not filed any appeal in regards to my execution sentence”, Bhai Rajoana stated in the letter.

Further in the letter, Bhai Rajoana�asked the President of India why he was�listening to�appeals made by the Punjab government and the SGPC about his punishment,�when he�himself hadn’t�made any such�appeals. �Bhai Rajoana questioned the president under�provisions in�Section 3 of the Right to Information Act.�
