:dateline:At a press conference in Jalandhar on March 13, national�BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha member Bimla Kashyap Sood said that she�appreciated the stand of the Punjab government on returning�the land acquired from farmers for the SYL-Canal project. She said that only Punjab has�the right to use its water and it that it cannot�be allotted to neighboring states against the wishes of Punjab.
Bimla Kashyap Sood was accompanied by several other BJP leaders during the press conference.
Ms. Sood�was elected to Rajya Sabha in April 2010. �She has also served as a member of Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Committee on water resources and Committee on transport, tourism and culture. �She understands the waters issue at hand and knows the dire consequences to Punjab if the water supply to neighboring states is not limited.
Similarly, in a press release dated�March 13, President of All India Sikh Students Federation S. Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad�also�took a stronger stance, saying�that�the central government�and the Haryana State government were�trying to loot the natural resources of Punjab. He added that�none of the political parties had seriously taken action to�sort out the SYL-Canal dispute. He claimed it was�necessary for Punjab government take initiative to save Punjab from becoming�a desert.
“Several political parties are taking stance in support of stopping SYL canal constructions, however, no political party has actually done anything to address the concerns of Punjab’s farmers,” he said.
