Word Of The Day : soore

ਸੂਰੇ (soore)
Meaning: adjective: Brave, valiant.

Quote:
ਜੋ ਜਨ ਲੂਝਹਿ ਮਨੈ ਸਿਉ   ਸੇ ਸੂਰੇ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ॥
jo jan loojhahi manai sio   se soore pardhaanaa.
Those beings who struggle with their minds are truly brave and distinguished. – Guru Amar Das Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 1089

Message: To fight (in self defence) for one’s country, tribe, race or even religion is a noble ambition but first we must overcome evil tendencies and deficiencies in our own self. It takes more courage, valour and strength to overcome our own conceit than defeat someone physically or intellectually. Infact the fight to conquer one’s mind is the toughest of all battles.

We can only be considered heroic and great when we overcome the viciousness and arrogance that lies within us. Overcoming our internal evils is called true chivalry.

Those who are able to do so attain a supremely higher state of divine consciousness. By conquering their minds, they conquer the world.

ਸੂਰੇ ਏਹਿ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ   ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ
They who suffer and die while fighting because of their egotism are not called heroes.
– Guru Amar Das Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 1089

Etymology: From Sanskrit shoor (strong, valiant) → Pali → Prakrit shoor (bold, hero) → Sindhi soor (hero), Punjabi/Gurbani soor/soore.
