Op/Ed: International Women’s Day – The Sikh Role Model

I have never had a woman role model. Not sure why?

However, on Nov. 10, 2015, I felt a shift within me when I heard Bibi Pritam Kaur (wife of Bhai Rashpal Singh, personal assistant to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale) speak from the stage of the 2015 Sarbat Khalsa gathering.

Her strength, her power of words moved me and compelled me to search for her on the internet. Yes! I read everything on her and listened to all her interview.

This is the woman whose husband and 18 day old son were shot and killed virtually in her arms. This is the woman who had bullets in her and yet she refused help from an Indian army solider.

Her words, “Don’t touch me,” spoke volumes to me. She did not want to be defiled by his touch. I understood.

But where did she get this strength from?

This is the strength that I long for.

So on this International Women’s Day, I salute Bibi Pritam Kaur. She is the closest that I have gotten to a role model.

    • Really quite disgusting and degenerate posting even by your consistently low standards ‘Harinder’ (not his real name). This article is about Sikh women role models and features the dignified grace and courageous nobility shown by Bibi Pritam Kaur as well as a posting mentioning the equally virtuous Mai Bhago and you respond by suggesting we include Sunny Leone – A PORN STAR! – as being worthy of joining their esteemed ranks in inspiring Sikh girls?! You could have raised the freedom fighter, Gulab Kaur, the first woman to occupy a seat in Sikh administrative history, Bibi Bhag Bhari, military mastermind Sada Kaur, rebel queen Rani Jindan Kaur, suffragette Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, renaissance woman, Inderjit Kaur, world renowned contemporary artists the Singh twins, Air Force Pilot Harita Kaur or any of the great heroines and inspirational women of Sikh history Bibi Nanaki, Mata Khivi, Bibi Bhani, Mata Gujri , Mata Jitoji, Mata Sahib Kaur, Mata Sundri et al but no you choose a sex industry performer as being suitable for Sikh girls to emulate ‘in the new age’. And no Sunny Leone is not a Sikh – you don’t get to call yourself a Sikh just because you happen to be born into a Sikh family background, you have to behave like a Sikh also! You only put her forward because you wish to tarnish the image of Sikh women and obtain some small veneer of religiosity to bring respectability and ‘new normal’ legitimacy to your own depraved lust. It is exactly this objectifying of women as nothing more than sex objects which has led to such huge numbers of Indian women being raped and gang raped in India and you should be thoroughly ashamed of your dirty mindset. No doubt with your strong anti Sikh prejudices and masturbatory dominatrix proclivities you think Indira Gandhi was a suitable role model for Hindu Girls with her bloodlust for Sikh lives and power dressing Saris. You posted on another story, again totally inappropriately on this website, about wanting to discuss the merits of sex outside marriage so you clearly have an agenda to undermine decency, sexual restraint and monogamy in Sikhism. Tell me are you equally enthusiastic at promoting your Hindu mother, your sister and your daughter to follow Sunny Leone’s example and present themselves cavorting naked and carnally with multiple partners for the masturbatory fantasies of debauched reprobates like yourself? No, you just want to watch Sikh girls and women degraded so. You are no better than the Islamic Jihadis who share your religious intolerance and sexist hypocrisies when they target girls and women from other faiths as being fair game.

  1. Much inspiration to women as always any Sikh Woman throughout the Sikh History – its sad that no one reads or searches our great singhani’s Mata Gujri and Mata Bhago alike ……. many others. Chardi Kala!!
