Indian Army Chief Denies Possession of Sikh Literature Lost during Operation Blue Star

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab— When visiting Sri Harimandar Sahib earlier today, the Indian Army Chief General, Dalbir Singh Suhag, stated that the Indian Army did not possess any of the Sikh literature or historical artifacts that were lost during June 1984. When SGPC Chief Secretary Harcharan Singh asked about the looted Sikh literature and artifacts, Suhag suggested that the SGPC approach the Defense Ministry of India through the Punjab government. General Suhag said that the looted literature might be in possession of the Intelligence Bureau, but that it wasn’t in possession of the army.

Dalbir Singh Suhag was visiting Sri Harmandir Sahib to pay his respects, along with his wife, Namita Suhag.  He claimed that he came seeking spiritual peace. It was his third visit to Sri Darbar Sahib.

General Suhag and his wife were honoured by the SGPC Chief Secretary for his visit to Sri Harmandir Sahib.  Harcharan Singh told Sikh24 that General Suhag pays obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib on regular basis.  “He was here last year too, but this year, we have requested his assistance in getting back the looted Sikh literature and artifacts,” he said.

During the attack on Sri Harimandar Sahib in 1984, the Indian Army set the Sikh Reference Library on fire. Eyewitnesses have said that the Indian Army stole handwritten historical Sikh scriptures along with Sikh literature. The SGPC has been trying to retrieve that literature from the Indian army since the attack, but has been unsuccessful.

Honouring of an Indian Army Chief stirred a controversy over social media.  Several social media users objected to the honour by the SGPC based on the Indian Army attack on Sri Darbar Sahib in 1984.

  1. Any rebellion in any Nation will be put down by its Army .

    The Chinese army Tinnamen square
The Egyptian Army against brother hood
The Pakistan army against Swat valley militants.

Don’t create rebels and dont break the law .
It will lead to all type of OP -Stars.

    • How did India get created again? Wasn’t independence and dignified liberty obtained through the efforts of those who were both labelled, convicted, imprisoned and put to death legally for ‘rebellion’? As for your examples you do realise that in the Chinese instance that was a totalitarian regime attacking unarmed civilians for wanting democracy and in the Egyptian instance a military coup against a democratically elected government (albeit one much like the BJP in its religious intolerance)? As a citizen you are only obliged to obey a just law not meekly accept oppression. It is not rebellion to stand up for your human rights and civil liberties in a democracy but your duty.

  2. SGPC are corrupt on one hand they honour the General who is failing to admit to the truth and than asking him to return of the stolen and looted literature and artifacts. On the other hand this Suhag is paying respect to which Guru after being involved Bluestar himself? He needs to face the Sangat and those witnesses who can look in his face and tell him the truth!

  3. Let us not confuse individuals with the State.General Suhag came to pay his respects He is rightly honoured by the Committee.

    • Doesn’t matter how many times you want to peddle a lie to defend the guilty RSS Harinder it still will never be mistaken as truth. Those artefacts and relics were purposefully stolen in order to make it easier to rewrite and deny Sikh history and theology. The only people with a vested interest in doing that are the Indians as elsewhere in the world people do not even know the existing history / theology of Sikhs often mistaking and abusing them as being Muslims. Motive and opportunity always points the finger at the criminal in question and the Indian Sarkar unfortunately has a long track record of wishing to undermine Sikh identity even though the expression of that was crucial to India’s founding and sustenance through wars with Pakistan and China. Jealous short sightedness and ingratitude.
