Nanak! As a dog never abandons the home of its owner, in the same way, remember the Divine single-mindedly and whole-heartedly (and never leave the divine sanctuary).- Guru Tegh Bahadar Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 1428

Message: A dog is known as mans best friend. In this couplet (number 45 in Salok Mahalla 9), Guru Tegh Bahadur points to the value of faithful friendship and reminds us of the dutiful conduct of a dog.

A dog never deserts his owners house. It continues to occupy and safeguard the house, even while it may be hungry or sick.

Likewise, we too need to live our life with faithfulness, focussed and steady in our endeavours on the path to the Divine. Be firm and frank, doing everything in such a way that the Divine can be revealed through it. You will cross the hurdles of life easily and successfully.

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man. ?Mark Twain

Etymology: From Sanskrit shvaan ? Pali suvaan ? Prakrit ? Gurbani suaan. From Indo-European kwon (dog), Latin canis (dog see English canine), French chein, Greek cyno (as in cyno-phobia fear of dog).
