O mind! You have not sung the praises of the Divine, and (indulging in vices) have rendered the precious human life useless. Nanaks advice is to remember the Divine (with love and devotion) like how the fish longs for water. – Guru Tegh Bahadar Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 1426
Message: Through this couplet (the first in the collection known as Salok Mahalla 9), Guru Tegh Bahadur inspires and motivates us to meditate on the Divine and thus render our human birth worthwhile.
How do we do it? By singing the attributes of the Divine, reflecting upon them, and emulating them in our lives with love and dedication all the time. In other words, long for divine attributes and virtues as the fish longs for water. Fish live in water and love it so much that they cannot survive without it even for a moment. For fish, water is life.
Can we humans nurture such a deep and profound love for divinity that it becomes natural for us to lead a virtuous life? Not due to any fear of a hellish afterlife or any heavenly reward hereafter, but for the sake of divine love, virtue and truth!
One must long for truth as a fish longs for water. -Rumi
