The Aam Aadmi Party is eying a victory in the 2017 PunjabAssembly elections. Before Kanwar Sandhu, a number of other renowned personalities had joined the party, including comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi.
Sandhu has been an avid supporter of the Aam Aadmi Party. He was recently in the limelight for interviewing police-cat Gurmeet Pinky. The duo worked on a series of interviews in which Pinky highlighted the roleof several senior ranking police officials in mass murders of Sikhs during the Sikh freedom movement in the 1990s. While Pinky publicized several facts, he later took a u-turn on his statements.
Both were also involved with a violent incident with Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana. Following the incident, Sandhu was rumoured as pro-Badal by several outfits, however, his joining of the Aam Aadmi Party has debunked such doubts. All of these were however rumours, as Sandhu has suffered immense loss at the hands of the Punjab Government. In a severe blow to freedom of press in Punjab, his TV channel Day & Night News was shut down by the Government.
