Farmer Suicide Widows: Thousands Await Justice in Punjab

Farmer Pension
A farmer suicide widow’s joy on receiving her first pension from United Sikhs

SANGRUR, Punjab—”I was 19 years old when I got married. Five years later my husband committed suicide because even after selling our land we couldn’t settle our debts. We still have a debt of 5 Lakh rupees. I have two kids and I work as a labourer to earn only enough to feed my family”, said Rani Kaur, 28, a widow from Lehal Kalan village in Sangrur.

Tens of thousands of farmer suicide widows of Punjab join all others of the world to say: “We want justice, not charity”. What they mean is that their husband had a right to life, which was taken away because of social injustice against farmers who struggle to pay for the cost of farming because of poor prices for their produce and high cost of loans to buy seeds, fertilisers etc.

There are many others like Rani Kaur in Punjab where farmer suicides are a major concern. In a bid to put food on their table, United Sikhs started the Rescue a Family (RAF) project in 2010 after we came to know about the plight of farmer suicide widows in Punjab through the Baba Nanak Educational Society (BNES), who provided us details of the farmer suicide widows. Today we provide a monthly pension of 1000rs to 150 farmer suicide widows from 40 villages in Punjab, on the condition that they continue to send their children to school.

“We need more sponsors to continue our efforts to help more farmer suicide widows so that their children may receive an education and not drop out of school to work in the fields,” said Mejindarpal Kaur, RAF Project Director, who personally meets the families. Click here to watch a video of one of her visits.

In May 2015, as in the previous years, our team from Chandigarh travelled to Sangrur to meet the widows we are supporting. We were accompanied by one our donors, Pinderpal Singh from Bangkok, who wanted to meet the families to hear their problems and offer moral support.

The RAF pensions are sponsored by donors from India, the UK, Thailand, Singapore, Canada, USA and Switzerland.

    • Although it is very tempting to send you into space my Sikh conscience tells me the last thing the universe needs is for you and others of similar ilk to spread out into the cosmos – at least on earth you are quarantined.

  3. I don’t want my future generation Singh to perish on earth .
If PM Modi does not provide it then there are many PM and countries which can let you fulfill the desire for everlasting Life after this planet Earth has got burnt up .
Social inequalities exist in all societies of world depending on many factor .
It is for the social reformer , charity giver and Government to address it .
4 billion is not a long time .
It is already half the time humans have been walking on this planet Earth .
We want to be a family of “SPACE EXPLORERS” unraveling the secrets of Universe and seeing the beauty of GOD in all his creation.

    • ‘4 billion years is not a long time. It is already half the time humans have been walking on this planet Earth.’ WHAT?!! I knew your education was poor but surely not this bad even with the RSS rewriting school textbooks. Scientists think that the Earth is 4.54 billion years old. Coincidentally, this is the same age as the rest of the planets in the Solar System, as well as the Sun. Of course, it’s not a coincidence; the Sun and the planets all formed together from a diffuse cloud of hydrogen billions of years ago. There is evidence that living things existed on Earth at least 3,500 million years ago – we are not even talking about dinosaurs at this stage but primitive micro-cellular life, certainly NOT Human beings! Homo sapiens (the only extant species of its genus) appeared on the earth in basic form approximately 150 to 260 THOUSAND (NOT BILLION!) years ago and has evolved in this time to create you. Well maybe ‘evolve’ is stretching it a bit considering the primitive views and beliefs you still cling to. Although it is very tempting to send you into space my Sikh conscience tells me the last thing the universe needs is for you and others of similar ilk to spread out into the cosmos – at least on earth you are quarantined.

  4. I have already said that we need to build a knowledge based society.
Poor need to be given opportunities to become wealthy and not alms.
We need to become Space faring Society because this planet Earth with India ,Punjab, Darbar Sahib and Akal takth are going to get destroyed by the expanding and dying Sun in 4 billion years from now.
Only Space Faring people and Societies will Survive.
Space faring is about SURVIVAL and not EGO.

    • Space faring is about nothing more than jingoism for a country like India – a chance for politicians like Modi to divert the attention of the masses away from real social inequality and have them blindly dancing to the drums of nationalism. Tell me how do you justify spending millions if not billions on space research when India is still receiving foreign aid payments from other countries to address its poverty, sanitation, pollution and lack of education? Have some self respect and compassion for your fellow citizens – they need dignity on earth not flags which can’t even flap on the moon. And stop worrying about what happens in 4 billion years time and concern yourself with what you are going to do by the end of your own lifetime when you have to account to Waheguru for your behaviour in the three score years and ten he has afforded you on this planet.

  5. 4) Space faring society? You don’t think spending that public money on educating the poor (birth control for a start) and providing them with welfare and health facilities would be better than just ego stroking posturing of politicians?

    • The poor to will become rich if they start space exploration.
Lot of wealth in Space exploration.
We can build new cities in distant planets and galaxies and parallel Universes where all these poor souls can find Jobs and become Rich like some of us .
With the wealth they can buy good health care and welfare also.
We need a young population to go to so many of these distant Galaxies and Universes.

      • You really haven’t thought this through have you? If the poor had enough money to get themselves launched into space (and I’m presuming you intend for them to still be alive rather than just symbolically rocketing their ashes?) they wouldn’t be poor and could have spent the funds on feeding and educating their families in the first instance. And as you are rich and claim to be a Sikh I would remind you Sikhi’s Daswandh principle obliges you to give one tenth of your wealth without moral judgement to those less fortunate as a matter of course.

  6. We need to create Jobs and transform our agrarian society to

    1) Knowledge based Society
    2) Technology based society
    3) Manufacturing based society
    4) Space faring society
    5) Wealth an Job creating society
    6) Business based society

  7. India and Badal Government should die in shame – portraying that they care for the people of India – where is your justice now – just ask these families…….

    • Don’t ask what Badal and India can do for you .
Tell us what you can do for India and Punjab.

( “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”)
      F. Kennedy’s Inaugural Address, January 20, 1961

      • Right so let’s get this straight, you don’t think the elected government with all its resources should do anything for the citizen but rather that the citizen poor as he may be should instead work for Badal and the Delhi Sarkar?! Kennedy’s address was a bit of theatrical rhetoric, every president and politician wants to have a speech to go down into history with. And in regards to the Sikh we have done much more than our fair share for both Punjab and India sacrificing our lives and our land – high time the rest of you Indians started to contribute instead of spending your time on discrimination and persecution.

      • ‘I am alright Jack’ mentality: that explains your attitude to the Dalits and the religious minorities and your revulsion at the moral social conscience in Sikhism towards all of humanity. Government Advocate: Could I ask you what provision you made for the wounded that you shot but were not yet dead? Gen. Dyer: I was ready to help any who applied. Government Advocate: General, how does a child, shot with a .303 Lee Enfield, “apply” for help? Dyer had no compassion for his fellow man either and was sanguine that it was enough he was doing his duty killing Indians for their betterment.
