:dateline:Following the release of the latestSGPC calendar, various Sikh outfits have outright rejected the proposed changes. Pro-Nanakshahi outfits have labelled the latest edition of the calendar as Bikrami (lunar) calendar, labelledas Nanakshahi calendar for the 548th year. The move by SGPC has reignited the old controversy over the calendar.
While there is significant support for the Nanakshahi calendar, number of Sikh organizations are also supporting the changes made by SGPC. Namely, the Damdami Taksal and Sant Samaj have long opposed the Nanakshahi calendar released by Pal Singh Purewal, alleging it based on the modern Gregorian calendar. However, the SGPC’s move to make extensive changes to its own calendar without much consultation is drawing sharp criticism from a big faction of the Panth.
In a press note shared with Sikh24, the president of the Sikh Youth Front, Dr. Sharanjit Singh Rataul has strongly condemned the SGPCs move. He has said that the RSS has established its direct control over Sikh shrines via moves such as this.
It may be recalled that the basic Nanakshahi Calendar was earlier released by the SGPC in 2003 which was later amended to include elements of theBikrami Calendar. The basic Nankshahi Calendar was widely accepted due toit conforming to scientific norms as far as calendar systems are concerned, however at the same time, it alienated many traditional Sikh organizations. Despite SGPC’s amendments, a number of Sikh organizations, including number of Gurdwaras based in Pakistan, North American and Europe have announced to celebrate religious holidays as per the original Nanakshahi calendar.
