:dateline:Efforts of Sikh activists including Bhai Manvinder Singh Giaspura and Bhai Darshan Singh Gholia finally borefruit when the Haryana government on Monday announced Rs 7.35 crore to the victims of Hond Chiller Sikh massacre (Haryana), currently residing in Punjab.
Bhai Giaspura told that around Rs. 3 crore have been distributed so far and rest of the amount would be distributed shortly.
The victims who have already been given Rs. 7 Lakh each, will be given more compensation worth Rs. 20 lakh each. Injured persons will be compensated with Rs. 1 lakh each and the victims who are facing mental ailment, will be provided aid of Rs. 50 Lakh each. For the destruction of houses and Gurdwaras, Rs. 5 lakh will be given to each of the victims, he said.
Welcoming the move of announcing compensation for the victims, he said legal measures were being taken against Ram Kishore and Ram Bhaj who were prime suspectsin pressing cases related to theHond Chiller massacre. Their role has been exposed by the commission which is investigating the matter further, he added.
It is worth mentioning that organisedmobs killed hundred of Sikhs of Hond Chiller village mercilessly in 1984, following the assassination of the PMIndra Gandhi.
A permanent and massive memorial should be erected in this village to the memory of these Sikh victims and to constantly be a thorn in the conscience of the villagers that live there now who would have benefited from this massacre. It could be something that school children form miles around could be brought to learn about this horrible history which is often ridden from the Indian mind like amnesia. Sikhs can learn a lot form the Jewish genocide experience and the way they have maintained those atrocities in the minds of young Germans in particular so that future generations do not find it so easy to murder with impunity.
