AMRITSAR SAHIB—The SGPC has finally taken serious notice by the Punj Piare seeking removal of the 3 Takht Jathedars by January 2. Reacting upon the ultimatum served by the Punj Piare, SGPC President Avtar Makkar has summoned an emergency meeting of the executive members on January 1.
It is notable that the SGPC executives were ordered by the Panj Piare on October 23 to oust Jathedars of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Damdama Sahib and Keshgarh Sahib for undermining the supremacy of temporal posts of the Sikh religion by granting pardon to Gurmeet Ram Rahim for his blasphemous activities.
Addressing a media gathering, Makkar said that baptism (Amrit Sanchar) and preaching Sikhi were the sole roles of the Panj Piare and they should not exceed their jurisdiction by interfering in the SGPC administrative tasks. He also appealed the Sikh organizations like Damdami Taksal, Nihang Dals, Sant Samaj and others to pacify the tension by convincing the Panj Piare.
Meanwhile at the behest of the Akali Dal, SGPC member Gurcharan Singh Grewal met the Panj Piare to urge them to soften their stance. However while speaking with Sikh24, Bhai Satnam Singh Khanda refused to go soft till the Takht Jathedars were expelled. On being asked whether the SGPC executives will suspend the Panj Piare, Avtar Makkar asked to wait for their stand till the meeting.
