:dateline:Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has started building the memorial for theSikh genocide of 1984. This memorial would be installed inbetween the road leading to Gurdwara Raqab Ganj and the office of theGurdwara Sahib. TheDSGMCs General Secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa had earlier tried to name the memorial on the names of martyrs of Sikh genocide of 1984 but the then state Government would notallow it.
As per information available, the memorial will be a wall on which names of all the martyrs of Sikh genocide of 1984 would be inscribed and information about the Sikh genocide of 1984 would be made available for visitors in its surroundings. The DSGMC taskedmany renowned planners with outlining designsketches for memorial, before going with a suitable model.
Despite the importance of this memorial to all people of all faiths, why is there no visible public support from those living in the capital of one of the world’s largest cities?
Because they don’t wish to be reminded of their living shame for what happened and the continued injustice being perpetuated up to present day. They are either complicit in wanting to forget about what happened (ignorant of the all too true maxim that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it) or content with the notion of ‘collective punishment’ although I suspect they would rapidly change their minds if one posed the question that if collective punishment against a religious community is acceptable in India how many thousands should have been killed in retribution for the assassination of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi by a Hindu? This memorial should have been erected in 1984 and those murderers who have got off scot free since that time should have been hanged.
