CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Justice Markandey Katju will be the chief guest at a conference being organized by Sikhs for Human Rights on December 10 in Chandigarh.  Conference is being organized to address recent human rights violations and growing intolerance in Punjab.  Conference will take place at the Makhan Shah Lubhana Hall, Sector 30, Chandigarh from 1 to 4 PM.

Justice Katju was met by a delegation of the Dal Khalsa and Panch Pardhani who requested him to attend the conference and speak on human rights.  A number of issues were raised by the Sikh delegation – including recent arrests of Sikh leaders, sedition charges, farmer rights and hunger strike of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa.

Justice Katju has accepted the invitation to attend the conference.  In a post made on Facebook, Justice Kajtu shared that he is well aware of the corruption within the Punjab Government.  “For quite some time I have been receiving reports of the autocratic and zalim behaviour of the Badal govt. This cannot be tolerated anymore, and must stop,” he stated.

He added, “In a democracy, the people are supreme, and they have a right to criticize the govt. So the bureaucrats and police officers of Punjab who do such illegal acts of arresting and slapping trumped up charges against critics of the State Govt. at the behest of their political masters are accessories to high crimes.”

Justice Markandey Katju has a track record for addressing human rights violations.  In 2014, he had given a statement seeking release of Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar on humanitarian basis.

  1. All Opinions against State need to be expressed through Elections 2017 ,debates and articles in news papers.

    People are not dumb .

They will elect you if you have any substance in you.

You cannot create Anarchy and Chaos under guise of criticism of state Government .

    The “THRONE OF PUNJAB ”

is up for grabs by any one but through a

    “BALLOT BOX”.

No Communalism ,Violence ,Fear ,Threat or Intimidation will be tolerated.

    • All opinions against state governance should be expressed democratically but that means allowing demonstrations, rallies, protest marches, debates on the internet where no sites are arbitrarily banned, politicians of all persuasions but particularly those in power at any one time being exposed to media scrutiny and not weak interviews with poor journalists afraid of losing patronage or from biased newspaper reporting when the newspapers are actually owned by the politicians. You cannot have free and fair elections when the electorate is intentionally kept ignorant or fearful in order to maintain the status quo – no country in history has been able to repress and oppress its people forever no matter the violence used against them. And when you say no communalism, violence, fear, threat or intimidation will be tolerated I trust you mean to extend this to the Punjab police with their history of fake encounters, extra judicial killings, torture and forced disappearances of Sikhs who dared to demand civil liberties or voiced dissent – it’s a basic human right to be able to say ‘no’.
