Akali Minister Sikandar Maluka Faces Protests in Dhapali; Not Allowed to Enter Village

BATHINDA, Punjab—Earlier today, almost over a hundred protesters blocked the entry to the village Dhapali village for Akali Minister Sikandar Maluka.  Maluka has been touring the villages in Bathinda area, promoting the November 23 rally being organized by Sukhbir Badal.

Villagers of all ages wearing black dastars, chunnis and holding black flags protested against Maluka.  They held signs telling Maluka that no Akalis are welcome in the village.  A large number of police personnel were later deployed in the area to ensure any mishap from happening.

Protests by Sikh Sangat and local villagers caused much embarrassment to Sikandar Maluka and the Akali Dal.  Just a few days ago, Sukhbir Badal had warned the people in Punjab of consequences for protesting against the Akalis.

Yesterday, in village Kamirpur, an elderly Sikh man slapped Maluka in a public rally.  S. Jarnail Singh, the Sikh man aged 65, was thrashed by Youth Akali Dal members later, leaving him in an unconscious state.

Tensions have been on the rise in Punjab due to continued cases of Guru Granth Sahib’s sacrilege.  The Punjab Government has detained over two dozen Sikh activists and leaders and has been harassing family and kin Sikh leaders.
