SGPC Asks For More Time from High Court to Clarify Details of Chief Secretary Post

sgpc-logoCHANDIGARH, Punjab—The hearing on the petition against the controversial invention and appointment of a Chief Secretary Post was conducted on November 5 by High Court Bench of Justice S.K Mittal and Justice M.S Chauhan.

Appearing before the court, the defense lawyer of the SGPC asked for an extension of time to clarify details about the post of Chief Secretary. Accepting the requests of the SGPC’s lawyer, the Court deferred the hearing to January 8, 2016.

It is notable that the petition challenging the invention of the  controversial Chief Secretary Post and the appointment of Harcharan Singh to the role was initiated by an activist of Sikh Sadbhawna Dal on October 5.

The petitioner had claimed in the petition that serious violation of the Sikh Gurdwara Act – 1925 was committed by SGPC by inventing the controversial post. Accepting the petition, the Court had summoned the SGPC to clarify the issue and suspend the Chief Secretary.

According to Sikh Gurdwara Act of 1925, the Executive Committee of SGPC doesn’t possess any right to invent any new post. New posts in the SGPC can only be formed by the General House of SGPC, the existence of which is under consideration of the Apex court of India.
