Malaysian Sikhs Present Memorandum To Indian High Commission Regarding Desecration of Guru Granth Sahib

Dato Amarjit presents Memorandum to Indian High Commission in KL

KUALA LUMPOR, Malaysia—Malaysia National Sikhs Movement (GERAKSIKH) led a delegation of Malaysian Sikhs to pass a Memorandum to the Indian High Commission Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur to urge the Government of India and Punjab to take immediate steps to apprehend the culprit who had desecrate the Sikhs Living Guru, Guru Granth Sahib, the holiest Sikh book.

The delegation was led by Dato’ Amarjit Singh Gill, Secretary General of  GERAKSIKH who presented the Memorandum to Mr. Rajiv Ahir, Counsellor at the High Commission. 

The Memorandum was addressed to the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi and Mr. Parkash Badal, Chief Minister of Punjab and sent through the Indian High Commissioner in Malaysia, Mr. T.S. Tirumurti.

Amarjit said that due to this sacrilege, this has upset the Sikhs not only in Punjab but has hit the nerves of the Sikhs worldwide including Malaysia demanding for justice and severe punishment be given to the culprit.

GERAKSIKH Central Committee at its meeting last Saturday decided that it was time to make a stand and voice out the feelings of Sikhs on the happenings in Punjab and as a result decided to hand in the memorandum to express the feelings of Sikhs in Malaysia.

Dato’ Amarjit Singh Gill who is a lawyer by profession also said that based on various media reports, Police forces  had opened fire onto peaceful protestors who were protesting against the sacrilege on Guru Granth Sahib, and as a result caused various injuries including death. It is urged that officers who ordered to open fire be taken to task.

“In any democratic country, every citizen has a right to protest and gather peaceful and therefore there is no need for such violence.  Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly to express their views. The protestors were protesting peacefully as they merely wanted justice after what was done to Guru Granth Sahib” added Amarjit.

Based on news circulating through social media, situation in Punjab is tense with curfew having imposed in various city in Punjab including the Holy city of Amritsar.   It is hoped that the Government of India and Punjab will give urgent attention to this appeal.
