LONDON, UK— Foreign affairs spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, Tom Brake, gained all party support for an Early Day Motion (EDM – a method for MPs to gain support for an issue) in building a monument recognising Sikh contribution in the first world war.

MPs for Labour, Conservatives, Green, SNP, DUP and the Independent party’s all supported the motion.

Commenting, Tom Brake MP said: “It is vital we recognise the sacrifices and bravery of Sikh soldiers who fought for Britain during the First World War.

“A permanent monument in central London is long overdue and would highlight as well as create an important symbol of the sacrifices the Sikh community made in the Great War.”

It was also highlighted that the monument was necessary in creating visible gratitude in a prime location and honouring the principles of the Sikh way of life and the Sikh soldiers of the British Army in that war.

Parliament House officially recorded and recognised the sacrifices and bravery of Sikh soldiers in fighting for Britain during the First World War; also noting that, although Sikhs made up only two per cent of the population of British India, they formed 20 per cent of the British Indian Army and that 130,000 Sikh soldiers saw active service from the Somme to Gallipoli.
