Twenty-one video lectures by world renowned linguist Dr. Harjit Singh Gill have been developed in collaboration with EMMRC, Patiala. They cover instructions and illustrations in the phonetic structure of Punjabi. There are numerous examples in different phonologic and syntactic contexts. These structures have been compared with English and French to show linguistic and cultural differences amongst these languages.
In addition the book, A start in Punjabi, by Dr Gleason and Dr Gill has also been converted into a multi-media e-book containing 20 chapters. For each example, word or sentence appearing in the book, there is a corresponding pronunciation, transcription and translation in English. The book is based on detailed analyses of sound patterns and syntactic structures of Punjabi.
The project has been completed under the guidance of Dr. Gurpreet Singh Lehal, Director of the center. Other members of the project are Dr. Tejinder Singh Saini, Mandeep Singh, Prof. Mukhtiar Singh Gill, Nishant Jain, Rakesh Dawra, Dr. Harvinder Kaur and Dr. Jaspal Singh.
The multi-media based website already includes pictorial vocabulary, games, quizzes, rhymes and talking stories besides lessons on alphabets, orthography, pronunciation, word building, sentence building, and Punjabi grammar. The website is being used in more than 156 countries for Punjabi learning in schools, colleges and universities in India, UK, Canada and USA and these videos and e-book can supplement the classroom teaching.
