CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Punjab deputy Chief minister Sukhbir Badal has reiterated that his government is helpless in doing anything for the release of Sikh political prisoners for which Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa is fasting since January 16.

In a statement made before journalists, he said that the Supreme court had suspended right of state governments to release any such prisoners who have completed their jail terms.

He said his government was only trying to take care of Bapu Surat Singh and best medical facilities are being provided to him. He appealed Bapu Surat Singh to end his hunger strike understanding circumstances and helplessness of the state government.

On the other hand, legal experts opined that the state government could ensure the release of Sikh prisoners if it aspired to do so as some ways are still there to be paved.  State government could approach centre government as the apex court has not suspended the right of former. Also, the state government could opt to move Supreme Court to present the case with arguments.
