Led by Satkar Lehar convener Kashmir Singh Khunda, the protesters gathered outside Hall Gate and raised slogans against heads of both Namdhari factions which parted their ways with each other after death of former head Jagjit Singh.
The agitators alleged that both the heads had used objectionable words against the Majhbi Sikhs and had termed their community inferior. They told that Thakur Dalip Singh in one of his discourses used objectionable word “Harijan” for the Majhbi Sikh community, which was proscribed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in its resolution passed on March 6, 1949 and the Indian constitution in Article 341.
Khunda explained that the cult head also forbad the community members to take part in langar. He asked Dalip Singh till how long it would take for the Majhbi Namdharis to be eligible to partake langar.
Explaining about other faction head Uday Singh, he said that on June 3, he had made derogatory statements against the Majhbi Sikhs going against Sikh tenets. He demanded the discrimination against them be ended.
Another protester Jathedar Baba Major Singh Sodhi, head Panth Akali Dashmesh Tarna Dal, demanded the alleged accused be booked for hurting their sentiments. A memorandum in this regard was submitted at the Akal Takht on May 22, he told. Later, on May 25, another memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Amritsar, on May 25. However, no action has been taken against the accused.
Many other likeminded outfits including Shiromani Amar Shahid Baba Jiwan Singh Ji Dharam Prachar Committee, Shahid Baba Jiwan Singh Nishkam Sewa Society, All India Ranghreta Dal Punjab, Panth Akali Dashmesh Tarna Dal Panjwa Nishan, Shiromani Ranghreta Dal Punjab and Sher-E-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh Sahsi, have supported the agitation.
